What is radon in Czech Republic?

Radon is a colourless, odourless radioactive gas that seeps from the ground into buildings. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking, and because you cannot see, smell or taste it, the only way to know your exposure is to measure it. Radon concentration is reported in becquerels per cubic metre (Bq/m³).

Safe radon levels

The World Health Organization recommends a reference level of 100 Bq/m³ and advises action well before 300 Bq/m³; the European Union sets a reference level of 300 Bq/m³. Radon varies strongly with ventilation, air pressure and season, so a single reading means little: it is the continuous pattern that tells you whether a high value is a real problem and whether a fix is working.

How radon is measured

Short-term passive kits (charcoal or alpha-track) sit for days to months and give one lab-analysed average. A continuous electronic monitor measures radon in real time and logs it, so you see the daily and seasonal swing and can act immediately. uRADMonitor seeRADON is a continuous radon monitor built for exactly this. See also our guides to how to measure radon at home and what radon level is safe.

How to reduce radon

The usual steps are improving ventilation, sealing cracks and entry points in floors and foundations, and, in higher cases, sub-slab depressurisation. Measure in the lowest occupied level of the building, and keep measuring after any fix to confirm the level has actually dropped and stays down.

Radon: frequently asked questions

Is there a live radon map of Czech Republic?

uRADMonitor is building an open radon map from continuous seeRADON stations. Live coverage is still growing, so where a station already reports it is shown in real time; elsewhere this page explains radon and how to start measuring.

What radon level is dangerous?

The WHO reference level is 100 Bq/m³, with action advised below 300 Bq/m³; the EU reference level is 300 Bq/m³. Risk rises with both concentration and years of exposure.

How do I check radon at home?

Use a continuous radon monitor in the lowest occupied room, at breathing height, away from draughts, and measure for long enough to capture the daily and seasonal pattern.
