ParticipantGiven that an approximate dose for a chest x-ray is 50 uSv, then with average readings of 7 uSv/hr, that’s like getting a chest x-ray every 8 hours! That can’t be healthy.

ParticipantThanks for the input. Older versions of Safari have the same problem too.

ParticipantVery cool. You might want to re-visit your average column calculation, they appear to be shifted up one row as the first one has 0 CPM when it should be 20. You’re off to a great start – good effort!

ParticipantI’ve also been watching unit 11000089 in Columbus, OH, USA. I think it has some fairly high readings too — but not near as high as Norway.

ParticipantThanks for the update. I am an avid documentary follower on Chernobyl. You don’t hear much about it these days, but few people realize that Sr-90 and Cs-137 have approx 30 year half-lives and there is still much danger in the “exclusion zone”.
I have been trying to follow the progress of the new arch that is going to go over the old and decaying sarcophagus, but you don’t hear much about that. You can see the construction efforts of it on Google Earth, but I can’t seem to find out just how close the project is to completion.
What solution there is for Fukushima remains to be seen.

ParticipantThe Apple Airport Express is available from Apple for about $99. I also have the Apple Airport Extreme as the base wi-fi station, so this little unit has no problem extending the wireless network. I have never attempted to connect the Airport Express to a wi-fi router other than Apple, so others may know if it works or not.
I originally had these small devices to use a feature called AirPlay. They have an audio jack on them as well where you can hookup your stereo to them and stream music to various rooms of your house. This was the original purpose for the Airport Express.
It looks like they work very well with the uRad so far (exploiting the Ethernet jack and the USB for power).

ParticipantHi, I’m Dave B from Aurora, Illinois, USA. I currently run unit 1100008E. I am really excited to be part of this very worthwhile project.
I work as a Computer Engineer. Although I work mostly with software, I also enjoy Electronics such as PIC programming to understand the “hardware” side of things. I also enjoy building circuits, so this project was of particular interest. I ordered the programmer just in case I need to flash the firmware 🙂 I’m also into Ham Radio too.
I also am an avid follower of all nuclear events via documentaries. I live near Ottawa Illinois which, in the past, housed a factory that painted dials with Radium Paint. Besides killing many of the women that painted the dials, the town was littered with contamination when the factory was demolished. There’s a video called “Radium City” which is very informative. It’s difficult to tell just how many of these “hot spots” are out there 🙁
My compliments to Radu on his efforts. This is a great project!
