It appears my device is having a fault.
It boots up and is responsive for maybe a minute then drops.
Power is on but communication stops.

Can you open the unit’s IP in your browser to see what the internal webserver puts out? It is possible the high voltage inverter is failing to produce 380V, resulting in a reboot. Then it goes for DHCP lease again (~12sec) and so on.

    Hi mystic860,

Looks like Radu was on the right track…149 volts is way too low. A SBM20 tube needs about 380 volts to work properly.
It seems like your unit’s high voltage generation is defective.

    Cheers,

    Hi mystic860,

Disconnect unit from power, then have a good look if there is any foreign objects inside the unit. Look also for moisture or water droplets on the PCB or the geiger tube. Dry it up gently with a hairdryer. Then try the unit again. If the voltage is still not around 380 volts, your unit needs to be repaired.

    Cheers,
    Wolferl

Inspected unit and there is no sign of damage or moisture.
    Tried a new power supply.
Runs fine for a few minutes then drops.

How do we handle the repair?

    Hi Mystic,

I’m sorry to hear your unit is dead. Send Radu a message or contact him via this link and discuss the details.
You are located in the US, right? Alternatively, you may also have some electronics expert near you having a look at the unit. Do you have the schematics for it?

    Cheers,

    Hi Ken,

No, I do not have the schematics for it. By the looks, the model A units seems to have a very simple circuit, it would not be very difficult to derive the circuit from the hardware. Do you have some electronics knowledge to do that? Which test equipment do you have (multimeter, oscilloscope)?
What you you can try is to remove the geiger tube (just clipped in, it is delicate, so use caution, and disconnect power first, then wait a few minutes), power up again and check on the devices webpage if the high voltage is now there. If it is, the tube is defective. The SBM20 is quite a common geiger tube.

    Cheers,

In every case when I power it up it functions correctly with proper voltage, however after a few minutes it then drops. Should I proceed with the test you outlined?
I do have a multimeter but am fairly unskilled at electronics.

    Hi Ken,

I don’t know your unit type very well, so I’m just guessing wildly here…
Maybe your units has a bad network connection (DHCP/static IP, firewall or DNS issues). That would explain the drop in HV after a minute or so, because the units reboots if it is unable to send data to the uradmonitor server.

Easiest solution would be a firmware upgrade, to help the high voltage inverter that seems to be failing.

Here’s how to do it: https://www.uradmonitor.com/firmware-upgrade-guide/

Can you get the usbASP programmer and try this? If yes I’ll send you the new firmware hex file.
