    Hi guys,

Yes, I agree with you both – the decentralisation of the single server model shshould be in our top 10 priorities. To defend against everything from hardware failure to malicious attacks.

How about if duplicate servers were hosted by trusted volunteers – the units could send data to the primary server until it becomes unreachable, then would send to a secondary, then the tertiary server if the secondary fails, etc. We’d have to write some form of data replication (as close to real-time as possible) to keep all the servers in sync with each other – so when primary comes back online it receives the data collected by the secondary, etc. There are definitely better solutions, but I do it this way for a cluster of servers at my work, and it definitely works.

    Hello all,

My name’s Laurent, I’m from France but have close ties with Japan as i am involved with the Citizen’s Radiation Monitoring Station (CRMS) which is a NGO created in 2011. http://en.crms-jpn.org/

My wife and myself helped this project in August 2011 after the Fukushima accident while we were in Japan for summer vacation.

At that time i also helped relatives to publish data on http://minnade-map.net/ which is a similar project but it’s not based on automatic data upload but user uploaded data. (I may help letting them know about uradmonitor project in the future).

I’m running unit #11000017. It used to be installed in my office, but i have installed it in our apartment.

A long time Linux users back in 1993, Open Philosphist who was involved in the Zaurus community some while ago, but still working as an IT guy in charge of different systems throughout the world.

I bought my device in order to test drive it, but i plan to buy another one when new models will be available, and ship one in the CRMS lab in Tokyo.

I’m also a safecast bGeigie nano owner, but as i also am the daddy of a 2 1/2 years old son, i didn’t find time to solder it yet.

Thanks a lot Radu for this great project.

Hello everyone! Please introduce yourself to the community, tell us a bit about yourself, your background, and why you’re hosting (or would like to host) a uRADMonitor.

    I’ll go first;

My name’s Ally, I’m from Scotland but have been living and working in Florida, USA, for the past 5 years.

I’m running one of the three (current) Orlando units (ID 42000001). My unit is an early model and part of a small test batch which included a barometric pressure sensor.

By trade, I’m an ETL (Extract-Transform-Load) database developer, data-modeler and Oracle Business Intelligence dude. I’ve contracted with Royal Bank of Scotland, Deutsche Bank at their London Headquarters and with British Telecom, working with databases on the largest employee intranet in Europe.

I’ve always been fascinated by Science, especially ‘scary’ science, and I love the collaborative aspect of this project – looking forward to ‘meeting’ you all!

    Topic: The new website

For now, just a few ideas:
    – wordpress might pose security risks . Some have indicated something like F3 might be a better choice (http://fatfreeframework.com/home).
    – there should be a few categories accessible from the main page: a landing page, the map page, the blog page, joining the network/getting units page , API page (current get a badge), and forum.
    – the new website should improve charting mechanism: instead of generating PNGs on the server, there should be sent compressed raw-data to the user (browser, ajax, json) and nice interactive images should be generated in users browser only. This would allow zoom, time interval selection, parameter (cpm, usvh, temperature, etc). This is partly done as we speak (see attached). More appealing charts should be implemented like http://d3js.org/ http://code.shutterstock.com/rickshaw/
    – the station owners should be able to administer their stations. This includes a control panel, where they can setup the coordinates manually (to override current geo-ip localisation) and setting up email alerts/notifications for various radiation thresholds.
    – there should be a forum, that can allow people to discuss ideas. The forum should support categories, subcategories and permissions, including private sections for sensitive discussions
    – there should be a blog to post updates and news
    – the user database should be common among forum, blog (for comments) and station administration panel.
    – the landing page should show a full width chart, with real time data from all stations in the network (we do a DB query for the last 10minutes of data, and from that we simply show values like they just arrived) – this would be animated and should give an idea to all users of the real time data flow. The landing page should explain what this network is, contain a few disclaimers, TOS, privacy terms, etc. . There should also be a section to present the uradmonitor model A with a gallery and technical details. I also like the video backgrounds used by some sites (ex. http://www.paypal.com)
