Interesting. The micro USB also has a data interface. Probably in some cases, noise/invalid characters are being injected. The data line is shared with the GPS module, where there is a parser. It is possible that the invalid data does a buffer overflow scenario.
I will investigate this further.
If my guess is correct, it will be an easy fix for the next firmware upgrade.
