Just an idea, we could possibly use IFTTT. (If This Then That)

It is a site/app that you join and setup trigger based events. There are dozens/hundreds of applications currently supported and they have the ability for you to code custom devices and events. So you could potentially setup a rule that says.. (If monitor has no response > 5hr) then (send text/tweet to this account/phone). The good thing is, we don’t have to have any firmware updates or revisions to the existing device.
