I really enjoyed the post on indoor daily variations, and it inspired me to think of some other ways you could increase the value of your uRad monitor. Your server records absolute radiation counts. Why not also keep a running average over 24 hours, 7 days and 1 year (the diurnal, the work week, and the seasonal cycles) to highlight exceptions to the typical radiation level for each site. This could make even uncalibrated “unofficial” monitors which join your network provide useful data. As a uRad owner, I would also appreciate things like an email alert if my monitor experiences a sudden spike, or if projected dosages suggest an impact to my health over any of those 3 time frames.

I assume your device is simply making HTTP POST or sending formatted CURL URLs to transmit data to your server. I wonder if you’ve given thought to Internet security and made some effort to prevent a man in the middle from sniffing this data, or worse, to falsify it to your server in order to conceal an accident or covert radioactive shipment? It’s not too early to consider this. I know that tiny wifi routers are capable of doing provisioning and updating via unique public encryption keys. That is probably a good method for uRad. Look into the “Fonera heartbeat” for inspiration.

Please send me the prices when they’re available, thanks!

  40. Johannes Franke 2 years ago

    Hi there,

I’d be interested to join, it’s a cool project. I could provide data for the northern area of Munich, Germany.
This network could kick in where governments misinform people after heavy nuclear accidents like Fukushima. Maybe they would even stop trying to lie at us if evidence is at our hands.
Please let me know the price and what to do to get a unit. Do you also ship kits for self-assembly?
And I have one idea for improvement: a unit that can be powered with POE so it requires one cable instead of two plus another power supply. POE is expensive but I would certainly prefer it.

    Thanks!
    Regards,
    Johannes

I am about 1 hour away from Seabrook Nuclear plant, and an old coal-fired plant. I am in sight of Seabrook when I set up my Amateur Radio mobile station.

I also teach science to the general public, in a hackerspace, and was planning on getting some tubes if I could not afford a commercial product.

I would love to contribute data globally, but also for local demos and awareness.

Hi there, I’ve just seen the latest eevblog video and I’m really keen on getting one of your units. I live in Shetland, UK and this area was known some time ago to have received quite high levels of radiation from the Chernobyl meltdown and many people think this is what is responsible for the high levels of thyroid disease in the area, so obviously having one of your units could provide some interesting data on background radiation.

I hope they’re not too expensive as I’m not exactly rich but I’m really hyped to get one if the price is okay.

    Thanks

Hi. I would like to join to data gathering and order 4 units.

Locations I can put it permanently in:

Zurich, Switzerland (close to few nuclear reactors in Switzerland)
Kraków, Poland (close to Czech Republic and Ukraine with also few nuclear reactors)
Gryfino, near Szczecin, Poland (near German border with few nuclear reactors close by)
and possibly one more close to Warsaw, Poland.

Also all these locations have lots of scientific and medical facilities dealing with nuclear radtiation, so again, nice to have monitoring in case something goes wrong.

    Hi,
count me in – others didn’t read the text just to send the email but I sure will :), it’s a great deal for a BigData computations, this kind of “weather -gamma measures hadn’t been yet invented i think.

My localization would be Poland/Kraków(Cracow) – hope that Piotr Ligeza didn’t choose the same “…” city to locate the meter.

Yes, would be nice to have some Nuclear Power Plant in Poland to monitor it, but the polish government must be waiting for the thermonuclear plants to work effectively 🙂 – Australians – big hugs for the Tokamak project!)

Poland was the country that had to wait long for Swedish or Norwegian nuclear plant workers, that were not able to enter work in the morning to notice that the Ukrainian plant Chernobyl has exploded, even though Ukraina and Poland are neighbours. Let not happen that again and help find the radiation increase indicators earlier than just keep on waiting for an official statement from the govs.

    Sincerely,
    TL

Forgot to add that Poland is the homeland of Maria Skłodowska-Curie 🙂 – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marie_Curie

  234. Janis Alnis 2 years ago

    Hi!
I am interested to add a station in Riga, Latvia, to join your network.
I could potentially assemble a unit myself.

After Fukushima I have for one year monitored radiation level in Munich and saw no increase.
Detector tube gas composition deterioated in 1 year from discharge clicks.
It started to give out many counts during temperature increase in sunrise. Had to replace the tube.

I see you use metal enclosure. Isn’t it blocking some radiation.

    • radhoo 2 years ago

      Hi Janis,

Tube approaching their end are expressing this behaviour, when the quenching gas can no longer neutralise detection ions and the tube enters an avalanche discharge.

Yet, the tube’s life is long: a SBM-20 seeing background radiation levels will last for almost 2000 years, according to the datasheet.

Maybe the circuit you have used was not missing critical components, such as the compensation capacitor, see: http://www.pocketmagic.net/2013/01/uradmonitor-unusual-background-radiation-reports/

In the uRADMonitor design, the 1mm thick aluminium enclosure contributes to the tube’s energy response compensation by attenuating the low energy gamma radiation. The system was designed to detect primarily (yet not exclusively) gamma radiation. The tubes currently used are sensitive to gamma and hard beta radiation.

The units are provided fully assembled and tested. Kits are not available at this time, here is why: http://www.uradmonitor.com/quick-details-on-uradmonitor/ (under uradmonitor as a kit). Still there are plans to offer support for kits / diy units in the future, see: http://www.uradmonitor.com/topic/urad-api/

  235. Janis Alnis 2 years ago

In Latvia end of November was reported elevated radiation level.

Search for “Radiation Spikes in Latvia”
Suspiccions could be old research reactor storage leak in Salaspils, Latvia.
Radioactive waste burial in Baldone, Latvia.
Or reactor accident in Zaporizhye in Ucraine.

I would like to join monitoring. I can assemble hardware myself and follow your instructions how to upload data to uradmonitor.

I’d be interested in installing one in Duluth,MN. It gets below -35°F here on occasion, though, so i’m not sure if installing it outside would be a good idea? What’s the minimum temperature rating on this thing?

    • radhoo 2 years ago

The units have been tested successfully in harsh conditions on a wide temperature interval: -4°F(-20°C) to +149°F(+65°C) and high humidity, to make sure they withstand the toughest weather factors when mounted outside.

The internal components generate some heat, so the units could probably function in lower temperatures as well.

  264. Michael 1 year ago

I’d like to buy one of your monitors. I live within the 10 mile zone of the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant that is located outside of Harrisburg, PA and thought this would be neat to see just if there is more or less radiation here vs everywhere else. TMI is the location of the largest nuclear disaster in US history where Reactor 1 suffered a partial meltdown in 1979 (before we moved here in 1980).

Your form doesn’t work, so thought i’d leave something here.

Sorry for the delay in my reply to you. The reason was a very intense effort to design the new model A3. Please check your email.

  311. Taras Yatsiv 9 months ago

    Hello!
Do you provide callibration certificates with State Approval? What kind of geiger tube you use?Why Geiger – it is absolutelly non professional – all IAEA recommendations promote NaI(TI) scintillator based detectors. What is your geiger reaction in mili seconds? Is it energy compensated?
I ask all this questions because I am professional in this and work in Europe on the same network. I would like to cooperate. I have standartized detector with RS485 out, but your data exchange platform with LAN ect is a good thing I wished to have.

    Hi

Two things…. 1) I have noticed that after a power failure the unit doesn’t come back online. If after a power failure I disconnect the unit and reconnect it, it comes online. My guess is that the unit comes up before the routers / bridges / swtiches and tries to connect. If that doesn’t work it doesn’t try again after a few minutes? 2) It would nice if the server that gets the data would kick out an email after say 12 hours of no data to the owner letting them know their unit is offline.

    • radhoo 6 months ago

I’m working to add automated notifications for offline but also alarm thresholds configurable by the user in the DASHBOARD section. The units have a watchdog mechanism that reboots them automatically if connectivity is down for 10 minutes. So it should go back online by itself. This is standard behaviour for all of the connected units, and you can see it in their uptime parameter, going back to 0 from time to time.

I am ~60 miles from the Nevada National Security Site (formerly called Nevada Test Site). I am interested in mounting a kit to collect data. My Gamma Scout perks-up during windy days when the flows are West to East. I think my location is invaluable for data collection.
